Big East Conference Tournament Recaps (Wednesday, March 10th)
Final Score: (22) Georgetown 69, South Florida 49 New York, NY (Sports Network) - Greg Monroe finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, as No. 22 Georgetown defeated South Florida, 69-49, in the second round of the Big East Tournament. Jason Clark sank four three-pointers and finished with 16 points, while Chris Wright added 15 for the Hoyas (21-9), who will face top-seeded Syracuse on Thursday. "I think we're at a good place right now," said Georgetown head coach John Thompson III. "Our team is healthy right now. I think that the guys are extremely focused right now, and so mentally and physically and emotionally I like where we are right now." Georgetown had lost to USF in the only regular season matchup between the teams on November 3 at home. But the Hoyas limited the Bulls (20-12) to under 30 percent shooting Wednesday to get the win, their second in a row. Georgetown hadn't won two straight since early February. Dominique Jones ended with 21 points to pace USF but shot just 6-of-18. Augustus Gilchrist added nine points and eight rebounds in the loss. "I don't think we played as well as we could have today," said South Florida head coach Stan Heath. "We really struggled to find a shot. That happened yesterday. I thought today it really caught up to us. We couldn't hit a perimeter jump shot." Gilchrist hit a jumper about five minutes into the game for a 6-4 USF lead, but Georgetown followed with a 17-3 run, which Julian Vaughn capped with two free throws for a 21-9 lead with five minutes to play in the half. The Hoyas went into the break with a 31-19 advantage. South Florida pulled within six several times early in the second half, including when Gilchrist's dunk had the Bulls down only 37-31. But Georgetown countered with a Hollis Thompson three and Wright jumper to restore a double- digit cushion. Just past the midway point, Wright drained a three and Austin Freeman followed with a jumper to make it a 53-39 game with eight minutes left, and the Hoyas pulled away from there. Game Notes Freeman, in his second game since being diagnosed with diabetes, finished 3- for-12 for eight points and added four assists...Georgetown shot 45.8 percent, including 7-of-14 from three-point range...Georgetown lost both regular season matchups with the Orange...South Florida shot 29.1 percent from the field, including 1-of-10 from three-point range. Final Score: Marquette 57, St. John's 55 New York, NY (Sports Network) - Lazar Hayward scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Marquette thwarted a late comeback attempt by St. John's to escape with a 57-55 victory in the second round of the Big East Tournament. David Cubillan added 11 points for the fifth-seeded Golden Eagles (21-10), who advanced to face fourth-seeded Villanova in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Marquette had led by as many as 14 in the first half before yielding the lead late in the second half. Maurice Acker provided Marquette with 10 points and five assists in a rematch of last year's second round matchup between these two schools. The Eagles crushed the Red Storm in last season's tourney by a 74-45 margin and beat them in overtime, 63-61, on February 24 in their only regular season meeting this season. D.J. Kennedy and Sean Evans each had 12 points for St. John's (17-15), which had won its final two games of the regular season. The Red Storm, who defeated UConn in the first round here on Tuesday, also received 10 points from Paris Horne in defeat. Marquette dominated early on, jumping out to a 27-13 lead on a Hayward jumper with under four minutes remaining in the first half. The Eagles went into halftime with a 10-point advantage, 27-17, but the Red Storm came out firing in the second half. Kennedy drilled a three-pointer after Evans hit three consecutive shots to begin the final period, pulling St. John's to within 32-26. A 7-0 burst later had the Red Storm within one, 36-35, on an Evans jumper 6 1/2 minutes into the half. Trailing by three moments later, St. John's again strung together seven straight points, with a pair of Justin Brownlee dunks improbably putting the Red Storm in front by a score of 46-42 with seven minutes to go. A Horne free throw with 2:22 left kept the Red Storm ahead by a point, but Kennedy squandered a 1-and-1 chance from the line, and Cubillan responded with a crucial three-pointer for Marquette that put the Eagles ahead, 55-53, with a bit over a minute remaining. Kennedy was tied up in the lane on the next touch, which resulted in a turnover since the possession arrow favored Marquette. Jimmy Butler and Acker each missed the front end of a 1-and-1 for the Eagles in the final moments, giving the Red Storm one last chance, but Malik Boothe's desperation heave from half-court was well off the mark. 03/10 18:55:52 ET |
